چکیده

Among the icy satellites of Saturn, Iapetus shows a striking dichotomy between its leading and trailing hemispheres, the former being significantly darker than the latter. Thanks to the VIMS imaging spectrometer on-board Cassini, it is now possible to investigate the spectral features of the satellites in Saturn system within a wider spectral range and with an enhanced accuracy than with previously available data. Statistical techniques such as clustering methods are powerful tools for exploring the spectral data of planetary and satellite surfaces, since they allow to identify spectral units between the data of a single celestial body in correlation with the surface geology and to emphasise correlations among the spectra of different bodies. In this work, we present an application of the G-mode method to the high resolution, visible and near infrared data of Phoebe, Iapetus and Hyperion collected by Cassini/VIMS, in order to search for compositional correlations. We also present the results of a dynamical study on the efficiency of Iapetus in capturing putative dust grains travelling inward in Saturn system with the aim of evaluating the viability of Poynting-Robertson drag as the physical mechanism transferring the dark material to the satellite. The results of spectroscopic classification are used jointly with the ones of the dynamical study to describe a plausible physical scenario for the origin of Iapetus’ dichotomy.

Sublimation Impact for the Temporal Change of Albedo Dichotomy on Iapetus

Introduction: Iapetus, Saturn's third largest moon, has a diameter of about 1436 km and synchronously orbits Saturn at an average distance of 3.6×10 km with a period of 79.3 Earth days. From a mean density of 1.08 g/cm and spectral observations from spacecraft and ground telescopes, Iapetus has large volume fraction of H2O ice. Remarkable characteristic of Iapetus is that there is an extreme al...

The Dark Side of Iapetus: Additional Evidence for an Exogenous Origin

‘l’he Saturnian satellite Iapetus presents on( of the most unusual appearances of any object in the Sc)lar System: one hemisphere is abc)ut. 10 times as bright as the other. The origin of the clark hemisphere which rcflec~s only a few percent of the solar radiation falling on it has historically been one of the great puzzles of planetary science. From a map produced from previously unstudied, a...

Finding the trigger to Iapetus’ odd global albedo pattern: Dynamics of dust from Saturn’s irregular satellites

The leading face of Saturn’s moon Iapetus, Cassini Regio, has an albedo only one tenth that on its trailing side. The origin of this enigmatic dichotomy has been debated for over forty years, but with new data, a clearer picture is emerging. Motivated by Cassini radar and imaging observations, we investigate Soter’s model of dark exogenous dust striking an originally brighter Iapetus by modelin...

Formation of Iapetus' extreme albedo dichotomy by exogenically triggered thermal ice migration.

The extreme albedo asymmetry of Saturn's moon Iapetus, which is about 10 times as bright on its trailing hemisphere as on its leading hemisphere, has been an enigma for three centuries. Deposition of exogenic dark material on the leading side has been proposed as a cause, but this alone cannot explain the global shape, sharpness, and complexity of the transition between Iapetus' bright and dark...

On a ring origin of the equatorial ridge of Iapetus

[1] Most recent Cassini observations by the Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) showed that the third largest Saturnian satellite, Iapetus, has a curious ridge system exactly aligned with its equator [Porco et al., 2005]. Because Iapetus has a large Hill sphere for the trapping of circum-satellitary material, a ring system might have been present during its formation. A scenario is proposed to desc...
